Balance is key to Seth Gold’s success as a circuit DJ and as a gay man.
His mixes are a smooth synthesis of pop, hip hop, dance anthems and drum beats. His life is equal parts party and contemplation.
“My music can get a really good flow going to keep you moving,” Gold said. “It’s a fusion of dance, hip hop and rap. I like pulling all those elements together.”
Getting his start at the age of 19, Gold has built a brand of fun and camp. Concentrating mostly on playing to a younger crowd, Gold will spin at Tracks on Thursday March 25.
“When I started deejaying, I saw the college crowd didn’t have a national circuit DJ,” he said. And since he’s crisscrossed the nation playing in Chicago, LA, Washington D.C.
Gold said he’s excited to make his Denver debut. “This is one of the last cities I’ve wanted to play,” he said. “The Tracks team seems really committed to their 18+ crowd. I’m really excited to be playing on their college night. It’s my crowd.”
Gold said before he spins at any club he does research to prepare but always leaves room for improvisation.
“I’m loving a lot of the new music,” Gold said about the variety of new tunes from Lady Gaga to Pitbull to LMAFO. “2010 is so different from even two years ago.”
Gold said his personal taste in music is a little more selective and narrow than the library of music he uses while spinning.
“I have one playlist for the gym, while I’m driving, and just about everything else,” he said. But his picky ear does translate to the dance floor. “But being selective comes in handy, I know I’m only going to play the best mixes.”
While Gold may have indulged a bit more in the party scene when he was younger, as he heads into his late 20s he has realized what’s really important when deejaying.
“You know, I acted like anyone else would have when I was 21 or 22 I was in college and I took advantage of being the ‘DJ’,” he laughed. “But I don’t party now. I deejay for the music. I might have the a couple of drinks, but I like to feel good the next morning.”
Gold, currently single, said he likes guys who are balanced like he is. He works out three times a week — running four miles at a time — and has his own private yoga instructor.
“I won’t date a party boy,” Gold said. “I’ve learned!”
Gold is currently working on an exclusive line of underwear with Elite Underwear. He said his line should be out in the next six to eight months.
And, of course, Gold brings balance to the age old debate of boxers or briefs too: he wears boxer-briefs.
